06-20-10 Sucker River Habitat Improvement Project Begins Duluth, MN -- After over a year of project planning, the Sucker River Habitat Improvement project has begun. Woody debris in the form of 51 white pine logs have been delivered to the site for use in the project and are slated to be installed later this summer. The logs were provided by Mike Zauhar Logging, based in Alborn, MN. The logs were sourced from a stand thinning harvest on St Louis County managed land, and provided with the roots still attached. We're pleased to report that the project benefits both sites, and was conducted in an extremely skillful and responsible manner with a minimum of ground disturbance. The photos below show moving the logs at the harvest site and the location of one tree, after removal from the ground and filling of the hole.
